Fibonacci

Fibonacci
2025
Crocheted nylon and indigo-dyed cotton yarn, ceramics, wood panel

Commissioned by IWC Schaffhausen for their boutique in ION Orchard Singapore

Inspired by the many precisely engineered parts in the IWC Perpetual Calendar timepiece, this concept reflects the Golden Ratio, also known as the ‘Divine Proportion’ and often occurring naturally in shells, ferns, or other plants and animals. The layout is designed after the Fibonacci Sequence, where each element is the sum of the 2 elements preceding it.

Despite being crafted by hand, crochet and ceramics both require precise technique and calculation. In order to fit into the Fibonacci pattern, the dimensions for each had to be carefully followed. Seen flat from the front, the modules form nested circles; as you shift your perspective, each module reveals various curves, stacked to different heights and adding a different dimension to the installation. The smooth surface of ceramic and ridged crochet stitches catch the light differently, giving the work a variety of textures.

Created in collaboration with:
Rei Minagawa (Ceramics)
Un Studio (Installation)

Participating crocheters:
Christal Tang
Ong Ker Ying
Yin Lan Wai
